A large majority of the corn produced in the US now comes from genetically modified strains. Only five years ago, 47% of the corn grown in the US had been genetically engineered. This year, however, the number rose to 85%. Despite the fact that many people remain concerned about the potential environmental and health effects of genetically modified crops, major agribusiness companies like Monsanto and Dow have pushed hard to have their genetically modified strains accepted. So far these corporations have been largely successful, as shown by the recent increase in genetically altered corn.
