As of 2004, at least 8 percent, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service, Report to Congress: Status of the U.S. Fisheries for 2004. It should be noted that of the 688 species, or “stocks” on the list, the status of 487 were not known, so many more might have been overfished than just the 56 for which NOAA had data.
