At the moment, only 3%, or 2,400 of the 80,000 dams in the U.S. are hydroelectric so the focus is more on retrofitting old dams to harness the potential power than building new ones.  American Municipal Power, a company from Ohio, is currently working on retrofitting 5 dams to generate power.  The project will cost them approximately $1.9 billion and will be done between 2013 and 2015.
