It’s hard to answer this question with certainty, as there are at least 836 mammal species about which not enough is known to determine the status of their populations. However, estimates of the number of mammal species threatened or endangered due to human activities range from a little less than a fourth of living species to as high as 36%. What’s certain is that the list of endangered mammals is long and growing, hundreds of species are in need of our help. Some of the most important steps we can take to preserve endangered mammals are to reduce habitat destruction, eliminate incentives to kill and sell endangered species, and dramatically curb emissions of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming.
