There are nearly 900,000 different known species of insects in the world.  Amazingly, this means that about 80% of all the known species in the world are insects.  Insects are the most diverse group of organisms on the planet which accounts for the large number of species.  Scientists estimate that there are more undiscovered insect species than already discovered ones, which means that the percentage is likely to be much higher.
