Organic waste is a type of waste that is derived from animal and plant sources that can be broken down by other living organisms. Food waste, which is the main contributor to organic waste from households, made up 14 percent of the total municipal solid waste stream in 2010.
Organic waste can be composted to prevent landfill use, and yet less than three percent was recyled in 2010.
