In 2006 2.3 billion tons of CO2 were released into the atmosphere through the consumption of electricity, accounting for nearly 40% of total emissions from human sources.
In the US, the EPA estimates that the industrial sector is responsible for about one third or 33% of greenhouse gas output. They announced plans on September 30 to cut greenhouse gas emissions from these facilities.
