In the US cars, trucks, and other vehicles account for about a quarter of our country’s total greenhouse gas emissions.  This is not as much as the percentage of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels for electricity, which is the single largest contributor to global warming.  However, it is definitely a significant source of pollution, and decreasing emissions from cars is one of the most effective things we can do to stop global warming.  By requiring auto manufacturers to increase the fuel efficiency of their vehicles, the US government can reduce a major source of pollution relatively easily.
