An estimated 5-10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary. It is more common for certain people of certain ethinicities and geographic regions to contract breast cancer because of shared ancestory. Variations of multiple genes are known to increase the risk of breast cancer, most commonly BRCA1 and BRCA2.
