Out of the world’s harvested trees, about 35% of the wood is used to manufacture paper – that’s 4 billion trees. However, that figure includes both logging from plantations and forest: 16% comes from farms, 71% from second growth forest, and 9% from old growth forest. The latter is considered deforestation, and uncontrolled logging of second growth forest (which is a young forest that appears as a result of natural or human-caused destruction of the old growth) can result in deforestation as well.
