This is a difficult statistic to find so I’m going to estimate based on some general statistics. According to the EPA, 35- 45% of the trash in the municipal solid waste stream comes from businesses and institutions including schools. Given this, one might estimate that the schools make up somewhere between 10 to 15% of the total municipal waste stream. About 35% of the total waste stream is composed of paper products, and the statistics are slightly higher for schools, around 40%. Therefore, wasted paper from schools produce between 4 and 6% of the total waste stream. If the total paper waste stream is about 35%, then schools might account for somewhere between 11 and 17% of the total paper waste stream.
