The areas of the United States that tend to flood the most and also have the largest floods are the Midwest, South-East and North-East. The Hawaiian Islands and Puerto Rico also tend to have high level flood patterns due to their specific geography and tropical climates. Topography and weather systems also are the main cause of flooding in the more temperate climates. Warm, moisture laden air stemming from the Gulf of Mexico tends causes frequent and intense rainstorms in the midwestern and south eastern regions and the latent geographical features such as the Appalachian Mountains contribute to intense flow patterns resulting in large scale floods.
