What particles are common in air pollution?

Pollutants are classified as either primary or secondary. Primary pollutants are substances directly emitted from a process (the carbon monoxide gas from a motor vehicle exhaust or sulfur dioxide released from factories) and secondary pollutants are not emitted directly (they form in the air when primary pollutants react or interact). Major primary pollutants include sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide/dioxide, toxis metals, ammonia, odors, and radioactive pollutants.
