What part do ceramics play in terra preta soils?

The article on bio char mentioned nothing about the presence of ceramic shards in that soil, they obviously were an integral part of the soils developing as they did. My own reading indicates that ceramics play the part of the dinner table (absorbing water and nutrients), while carbon serves the part of the pantry (adsorbing those water and nutrients) as well as neutralizing the pH.
