Outsides of baseballs are typically made out of cowhide. Specifically, Number one grade, alum- tanned, full-grain cowhide usually from Midwest Holstein cattle. These cows are preferred because of the smoothness and cleanliness of the leather. An official MLB baseball must be white and have 88 inches of waxed red thread. The MLB has 17 specifications that a baseball must meet before being approved for game play including thickness and grain strength.
