According to a 1994 Stanford University press release, the optimum population of Earth is between 1.5 and 2 billion people. The scientists who conducted the study to find this number “predicated their estimate on a desire to preserve the great diversity of human cultures and also to secure basic human well- being for all the world’s people, including future generations.” The WorldWatch Institute puts the optimum number at between 2 and 3 billion maximum, which they predict will be a significant reduction from a “mid-to-late 21st century peak in the 9 to 10 billion range.”
