A British entrepreneur proposed a $25 million dollar award for anyone who could extract one billion tonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere for a decade. Two colleagues from Columbia University devised an efficient enough plan to warrant executing.
This process involves pumping atmospheric air through a chamber containing sodium hydroxide. The sodium hydroxide reacts with the CO2 and forms sodium carbonate – this is the sodium containing solution.
The solution is then mixed with lime to precipitate powdered calcium carbonate which occurs naturally as limestone. The “limestone” is then heated in a kiln which releases pure CO2 for storage.
Note above** i meant CARBON containing solution…sorry for the confusion!
