Lake Baikal, in Russia, is the oldest lake on earth. It is 25 million years old.
Located in the south of East Siberia, Lake Baikal is the oldest lake in the world at 25 million years old. It is thought to have resulted from the product of tectonic forces. The water within this lake is one of the clearest and transparent in the world. The name’s origins are questionable but the most typical is from the Turkish word for “rich lake” referring to the clear waters and animal life residing in the surrounding areas.
Awesome I wonder why the water is so clear though.
Interestingly enough, it also holds nearly 20% of the world’s unfrozen fresh water. Several years ago, six new species were discovered in it’s waters. Because the lake is so old, evolution has had time to over in order to create new species.
