The oldest fossil is a stromatolite.  Stromatolites date back 2.74 billion years.  This is a sort of layered rock formed when bacteria trap sediments in film they create. They are typcially found in isolated areas with high saline levels.  Stromatolites are roughly 5 times older than the oldest fossil containing a multicellular organism, which date as far back as 600 million years.
