In 1828, a Hungarian inventor, Anyos Jedlik, built a small electric motor and installed it on a model-size car.  Shortly thereafter an American, Thomas Davenport invented the American DC motor, and installed it in a car that he ran on a circular, electrified track.  A few years later, 1838, a Scotsman by the name of Robert Davidson constructed an all-electric locomotive, which had a top speed of 4mph.
