The Mayan civilization was known for clear cutting forests to burn the trees as fuel as well as to create more agricultural land. They deforested larges swaths of land using the slash and burn method. The Maya lived in Central America for 1200 years, peaking around 900 AD. After exponential growth, they mysteriously disappeared. This massive deforestation and subsequent soil erosion is considered to be one of the possible factors leading to their demise.
