What is ocean thermal energy conversion?

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) converts solar radiation into electric power. Because oceans cover such a large percentage of the earth (over 70%) and absorb so much energy from the sun each day, they are incredibly effective at collecting and storing solar energy. OTEC employs the ocean’s natural thermal gradient (the differences in temperatures of the different ocean layers) to produce power. These systems take advantage of the natural storage capacity of the oceans and turn them into an enormous renewable resource, creating billions of watts of electricity.
