There are a number of elements that farmers and plant growers alike will refer to as plant nutrients from soil solids, they are as followed:
Macronutrients are used in large quantities:
    Nitrogen
    Phosphorus
potassium (sodium utilized mostly if potassium is lacking)
    calcium
    magnesium
    and sulfur

Micronutrients are used in small quantities:
    iron,
    manganese
    copper
    zinc
    boron
    chlorine
    molybdenum.

As plants grow, and feed off the soil, these nutrients become depleted. Over farming can lead to the full depletion of such nutrients, making the land unsuitable for sustaining plant life.
