Nitrous acid (HNO2) is a weak, unstable, and inorganic acid. The compound only exists in solution and in the form of nitrite salts. Most commonly, nitrous acid is used to make diazonium salts, which are used in the organic synthesis of azo dyes, destroying toxic sodium azide. The process commences by acidifying one of the salts, as they are more stable.
