The new farming unit established in Saudi Arabia uses vertical farming and aeroponics to create a sustainable, space optimizing, form of agriculture that is totally independent of soil, pesticides, sunlight, and outside water sources. The unit is like a series of shelves, each shelf has a reusable mesh cloth that the plants grow on. Their roots break through this cloth into a small space filled with nothing but air, where nutrient rich water can be misted. LED bulbs provide light (the goal is to use solar power to run these lights), and the water is harvested from the humidity in the air. The overall idea is to eliminate the pressures of land use by growing vertically, the stresses of finding a water source by using the air, and pollution of fossil fuels required in distribution from rural areas by growing right in the city.
