Manatees are protected under three legislations, two federal and one state, and they are both old. The federal laws are the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the Marine Mammal Act of 1972, while the state law is the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978. These laws prohibit people from harassing, touching or being too close to manatees. Florida is very good about Idle and Slow Speed Zones; the problem is that people don’t obey them. Many marine labs and government agencies are sending people to keep watch and write up people who break the law.
The Endangered Species Habitation Protection Act can also aid endangered species such as manatees. The act provides tax breaks for people who own an area that is environmentally sensitive and allow protection and conservation of the area.
