University of Utah scientists developed the heightened ozonation treatment (HOT), which uses pressurized gas microbubbles to break down pollutants. Initially created for pollutants for soil contamination with metals, HOT will go through its first real life test in China for water contamination. China will use HOT on Lake Tiahu, a lake in an industrialized region. Scientists hope that eventually, soil decontaminated through the HOT technique will be able to be used to plant trees and plants in public areas instead of going to a landfill.
