Net energy analysis is the amount of direct and indirect energy required to produce one unit of energy. Direct energy is comprised of the fuel source and/or electricity needed to obtain and/or produce the energy. Indirect energy is the total energy used in production of the goods and services that facilitate with the actual energy extraction. In determining net energy, the amount of energy used is calculated by quantifying energy in terms of fuel, capital and labor.
