There are three anti-biotic components of neosporin. Bacitracin, which is a good topical antibiotic that works on gram positive cell walls; Neomycin, which is an aminoglycide & can also be used orally; and Polymyxin B, which works on gram negative cell walls.
Neosporin is an ointment containing three antibiotics: bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B. The first is a mixture of proteins produces by Bacillus subtilis that is efficient against gram-positive cells. Neomycin works against gram-negative and partially against gram-positive bacteria, and is known to cause allergy in people. Polymyxin B completes the set by killing gram-negative bacteria. The ointment of course also contains inactive ingredients: Cocoa Butter, Cottonseed Oil, Olive Oil, Sodium Pyruvate, Tocopheryl Acetate, White Petrolatum
