Since 2006, it has been made from a microfiber composite. Before it was made from leather and required a break in period that also allowed for inconsistencies from ball to ball. The new material has no break in period and makes all balls the same.
The original NBA basketball was made of leather. Spalding produced the newest NBA-approved ball. The ball is made of two panels of a microfiber composite. The scientific technology allows for moisture management and does not require a “breaking-in” period like the old leather balls.
