Nanotechnology is the ‘engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale.’ This type of technology refers to constructing something from the bottom up. Nanotechnology was brought to attention in the 1980’s by K. Eric Drexler, who used the term to describe building machines on a molecular scale.
Nanotechnology is often referred to as the stuff of science fiction. Currently nanowires and carbon nanotubes fascinate scientists in their light but incredibly strong nature. In theory, nanotechnology could be constructed to make food replicators as seen in Star Trek, or enable us to live longer, or self-heal more quickly. There are dangers of course as well, and concerns about weaponry in defense and toxicity in medicine have been brought into discussion. Nanotechnology is in its infancy, and we still have much to learn.
