I don’t know if the chemicals commonly found in nail polish removers are bad for the environment, but they can certainly be bad for your health. Most nail polish removers feature acetone as the key ingredient, and this chemical can cause shortness of breath. Under long term exposure, it can cause chronic bronchitis. Toluene is also found in many nail polish removers and can cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Repeated exposure can cause birth defects in children. Ethyl acetate is the substitute for acetone in removers that are labeled non-acetone, and it causes the same effects as the previous chemicals mentioned.
