Brazilian music comprises various regional music styles influenced by African, European and Amerindian forms. Original styles unique to Brazil include choro, sertanejo, brega, forró, frevo, samba, maracatu, Bossa nova, MPB, and Brazilian rock.
Tropicalismo was an art movement in Brazil that also included music. One band to spring from that movement, Os Mutantes, has had considerable influence on contemporary music and are currently signed to ANTI-.
Bossa nova music is one of Brazil’s most popular musical exports. It’s roots can be traced up to samba, but a softer percussion element and a more overtly jazzy “feel”. One of the most famous bossa nova songs is “Girl from Ipanema”, which won a Grammy in 1965. My favourite version is Celso Fonseca. Check it out here:
