A mullet is a ray-finned fish that lives in coastal temperate and tropical oceans. Some of the 80 species live in fresh water, as well. These fish have two separate dorsal fins and are missing the lateral line organ. They eat detritus, or bits of organic material floating in the water. People living in the Mediterranean consider them an important food source.
