The movie is about a consumer products tester who falls in love with a political activist and does everything he can to convince her that he is worthy. He ends up running away to San Marcos, joining the rebels there, and eventually becoming the President.
It’s one of Woody Allen’s earlier films. It’s a satire on Cuba and the political situation at the time. It’s called bananas as a slang term for “crazy,” and also in reference to the location, sometimes called the “banana republic.” It was #69 on AFI’s 2000 “100 Years…100 Laughs” list. In my opinion, it’s one of Allen’s funniest films.
