What is mountaintop mining?

Mountaintop mining (MTM) is a mining technique which takes coal resources from the top of a mountain. The technique is unique because once a coal seam is mined out of a particular mountain, the land above which was also mined out is replaced back onto the mountain top in an attempt to reduce the environmental disturbance. Used in the eastern United States, MTM has posed lots of problems with environmentalists and animal activists alike. Once the animal life has been displaced from the area mined, animal activists are concerned with how the animals will repopulate the area.
