Mountaintop removal mining is associated with coal mining. It is also a complex process involving two steps – the removal of mountaintops to expose coal seams, and the disposal of rocks and dirt that lie above the coal into adjacent valleys (also called “valley fills”).
Mountaintop removal can be harmful to the environment in the following ways:
-Research has noted an increase of minerals in the water which can harm fish and macroinvertebrates.
-Streams are sometimes covered up.
-Wetlands are created.
-Forests may become fragmented.
