What is the motivation behind microloans?

Microloans are designed to reduce poverty.  The idea is that people who don’t have the funds to start a business can apply for these loans,  If approved, the applicant can now land a chair at their local hair salon for example.  Microloans evolved from a form of economic aid in developing countries where a small amount of capital can really go a long way.
