What is motivating the automobile industry to go green?

The short answer to that is consumer demand. People want greener cars, so the industries, realizing they had an untapped marketing tool, responded. More importantly though, the 2008 recession and resulting bailout of the auto industry made major companies realize that they are not quite invincible. This fueled a desire to innovate that made Detroit the fastest growing tech job market in the country. Another driving factor was the realization that “green” doesn’t have to mean a complete overhaul of production. Other cheaper methods, like turbocharging smaller engines, have also gained a foothold in modern thought about how to decrease the negative environmental impact cars have.
