San Francisco is likely the greenest city in California and is arguably the second greenest city in the country (next to Portland).
San Francisco does seem to be the greenest city. I found that for city sponsored events they do not hand out bottled water, take out and delivery items are not given in Styrofoam containers, and there won’t be any plastic bags at local markets.

San Francisco is also very sustainable because they have an amazing waste system. Recycling and composting are mandatory by law and are free of charge, also the bins are much larger than the one for garbage. ALL plastics are recyclable, except plastic bags, in the curbside recycling program which is very uncommon. SF is working toward zero waste by 2020 and is well on it’s way.
