The most recycled material/product is asphalt, which may come as a surprise to some. Asphalt, which is most commonly used in road construction, is 100% recyclable. It’s most common form is called Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and it is made of sand or gravel together with asphalt binder, which basically a glue derived from petroleum. To recycle the asphalt, old asphalt pavement is pulverized and mixed with a portion of new asphalt; this process can be repeated indefinitely. Close to 80 million tons of asphalt are recycled annually, compared to 70 million tons of scrap steel followed by 6.2 million tons of newsprint.
