What is the most powerful tornado in history?

Good question, Barnard.  There are a few different record breaking tornadoes, depending on what you consider to be the most powerful.  There are many statistics on powerful tornadoes, including the deadliest ones, the most damaging ones, and the widest damage width.  I think the most applicable measures to answer this question would be the longest tornado, as well as the tornado with the highest wind.  The tornado with the longest path went for more than 219 miles and is named the Tri-State Tornado, since it went through Missouri, southern Illinois, and Indiana.  The tornado with the highest recorded wind speed was an F5 in Oklahoma City with a wind speed of around 300 miles an hour.

    Hope this helps!

The most extreme tornado on record was the Tri-State Tornado on March 18, 1925.  It passed through Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana.  It holds records for the longest path, 219 miles, the longest duration, 3.5 hours, and fastest speed, 73 mph.  It left 695 dead, the most ever for an American tornado.
