While there is no good way to quantify this, many sources site the Citarum River in Indonesia as the most polluted river in the world. Along the banks lie hundreds of small villages who use the river as a dumping site. Additionally 500 chemical factories line the shore who do the same thing. Nobody fishes in the river anymore, it is now more profitable to fish recyclables and trash from the river to sell for small amounts of money.
