The Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia is probably the most polluted in the world. With 9 million people nearby and 500 chemical plants using it as a toxic dump, locals can no longer fish the river, but find it more profitable to forage through its floating garbage layer for profitable items to re-sell. See the link below for some photos–in many places only a passing boat breaking the surface gives any clue that there is actually water present and not just a pile of refuse.
