According to data collected by the Enviornmental Workin Group, the most polluted river in the United States is the Mississippi River that flows throught TN, AR, LA, MO, IL, WI, IA, KY and MS. Approximately 700 million pounds of toxic waste is dumped into the Mississppi River. Pollution from agricultural runoff accounts for a majority of the waste. In addition, “bacterial pollution…and the runoff that contains livestock manure, also makes large stretches of the Mississippi River a no swim zone,” (“Mississippi River Pollution“)
The second most polluted river in the U.S. is the Ohio River.
