The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently published a report on the 50 most polluted U.S. rivers and water sources that placed the Mississippi at the top of the list with more than 700 million pounds of toxic chemicals. The major contributors were found to be fertilizer plants in several states along the river. Runoff from farms, city streets, and sanitation plants also contribute to the high levels of nitrogen and phosphorous threatening the health of the river.
