The most polluted city in China (and one of the most polluted cities in the world) seems to be Linfen, located in the country’s Shanxi province. Linfen is situated in China’s coal belt, and coal dust makes up much of the pollution there. Soot and other emissions come from burning coal in industrial plants around Linfen, and tailpipe emissions from automobiles also contribute to overall pollution. This is not surprising, as coal and automobiles are the two most important sources of air pollution in China generally.
