The most wide-spread damage is usually to the directly affected wildlife. This has a wide impact on the ecosystem. The local economy may also suffer, as the affected wildlife that might be caught and sold for food is unacceptable after a spill.  If the spill is not cleaned up quickly enough, the oil can spread far and wide, heavily affecting the water supply and air quality of the area where the spill occurs. Also, environmental damage caused by oil spills can take many years to fully recover from.
