Most of the stuff you throw out is actually organic and will degrade harmfully over a number of years. The largest contributor to household waste which is not would be plastic. Because plastic doesn’t degrade over a reasonable amount of time, once it is in the environment it is simply broken down into smaller and smaller pieces, without really going away. Scientists are worried that once the plastic becomes small enough, it is eaten by fish which is very harmful to them. Once it gets broken down even smaller, it could be eaten by micro-organisms, which simply aren’t smart enough to avoid them and die. This could cause a serious breakdown in the food web, affecting the larger animals which eat the micro-organisms, and through them, us.
