Hexavalent Chromium (or Chromium 6) is one of the most toxic chemicals found in footwear. Used in processing leather, it is linked to cancer, skin and lung irritations. Usually a larger issue for the factory workers exposed to this chemical, it is still quite noxious.
Other materials include toxic glues, PVC, polyurethanes and other petroleum based materials. Many shoes end up in landfills, with these chemicals still in them.
